The last few days have been a reflective time for Danny Hirst, owner of Hirst Locksmiths, as he took a moment to honour friends and colleagues who are no longer here. To balance the weight of remembrance, Danny wanted to share a lighter memory from his service in the Army, offering a glimpse into the camaraderie and humour that helped keep spirits high during challenging times.
This story comes from Basra Palace in Iraq (formerly one of Saddam Hussein’s residences), where Danny lived during his six-month tour. Just before Christmas, his unit worked on a charity calendar for people back home. Danny’s team, Boat Troop, took the “minimal costume” theme to heart. Danny ended up wearing an orange wig, a Superman cape, and nothing else except a carefully placed fire extinguisher. His friends found it hilarious, and the moment quickly became one of the unit’s favourites.
After the photo shoot, Danny took a boat out on the training lake inside the palace grounds. He hit a perfect wake, launched several metres into the air, and landed cleanly to cheers from everyone watching. It was one of those memorable, ridiculous moments that reminded everyone to find light where they could.
Tomorrow, Danny will attend the two-minute silence memorial before heading back out to support customers across the Scottish Borders with the professional locksmith service he is known for.
