Former Soldier and Scottish Borders Locksmith Raises Over £1200 for CALM Ahead of 100-Mile Ultramarathon
By Hirst Locksmiths | Earlston, Scottish Borders TD4 6ET
Local locksmith and former British Army soldier Danny Hirst, owner of Hirst Locksmiths in Earlston, Scottish Borders, has already raised more than £1,205 for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) ahead of taking on the Rat Race Castle to Castle 100-mile ultramarathon, which starts on 4th July.
The challenge is about much more than completing 100 miles. It is about raising awareness of suicide prevention, encouraging conversations around mental health and supporting a charity that provides life-saving help to people when they need it most.
Southern Reporter Shares Danny’s Story
Danny’s fundraising challenge was recently featured in the Southern Reporter, helping spread awareness across the Scottish Borders and beyond.
Since the article was published, support has continued to grow. Friends, family, customers and complete strangers have all contributed towards the fundraising target.
One particularly moving moment came after Danny completed a locksmith job in Hume, Scottish Borders. While chatting with customers about the challenge and why it means so much to him, they generously donated £100 towards the fundraiser.
Danny described the gesture as incredibly emotional and a reminder of just how supportive local communities can be.
Why This Challenge Matters
This challenge is deeply personal.
Having lost seven friends to suicide and experienced his own struggles with mental health in 2019, Danny understands first-hand how important organisations such as CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) are.
CALM provides confidential helplines, webchat services, practical advice and mental health resources for anyone struggling with life or experiencing suicidal thoughts. The charity also works tirelessly to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage people to seek support before reaching crisis point.
Every donation helps CALM continue delivering these vital services.
