Ultra Marathon Challenge for CALM – From Bamburgh Castle to Edinburgh Castle
Raising Awareness for Mental Health from the Scottish Borders (TD4 6ET)
In July, Danny Hirst of Hirst Locksmiths, based in Earlston, Scottish Borders (TD4 6ET), will be taking on an extraordinary endurance challenge — the Rat Race 100-mile ultra marathon, running from Bamburgh Castle to Edinburgh Castle.
As part of his preparation, Danny will also be tackling the Pendle Way in a Day, a 45-mile ultra marathon, in a couple of weeks time. This demanding event will act as a key marker to gauge fitness, resilience, and readiness ahead of the 100-mile challenge.
But this challenge is about far more than physical endurance.
Why This Ultra Marathon Matters
In October 2019, Danny experienced suicidal thoughts that led him onto a recovery pathway involving two years of professional therapy. Like many people across the Scottish Borders and beyond, this was a period defined by internal struggle rather than outward signs.
That journey toward recovery inspired Danny to raise money for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) — a UK suicide prevention charity that provides life-saving support to people who are struggling, battling their own demons, or simply need someone to talk to.
By taking on these ultra marathon events, Danny hopes to raise both funds and awareness for mental health, while encouraging open conversations around suicide prevention.
